What credit cards should you use for the Christmas sales?

The annual Christmas sales are just around the corner, and while there are far too many deals out there to possibly summarise, what I want to focus on is your credit card strategy.

Using the right credit card can give you a nice rebate on your spending, on top of whatever discounts you’re already snagging. Naturally, you’ll want to ensure you’re using the card that offers the highest possible earn rate, to avoid leaving value on the table!

For online spending

I’m going to assume that a lot of your Christmas shopping will be done online, and if so, then you definitely want to get either the Citi Rewards Card or DBS Woman’s World Card.

Citi Rewards Card

The Citi Rewards Card earns 4 miles per S$1 (mpd) on any transactions processed online, capped at S$1,000 per statement month.

However, there are two pitfalls to be careful of. First, it does not award 4 mpd on travel-related transactions such as airlines, car rentals, cruise liners, travel agencies and railways. If you’re snapping up travel-related deals, this is not the card to use.

Second, always be sure to make payments directly with the card, instead of “wrapped” in a mobile wallet like Apple Pay or Google Pay. If the card is wrapped in a mobile wallet, then the earn rate will be reduced to just 0.4 mpd.

DBS Woman’s World Card

Like the Citi Rewards Card, the DBS Woman’s World Card also earns 4 mpd on any transactions processed online, capped at S$1,000 per calendar month.

Even better, it does not suffer from the same pitfalls as the Citi Rewards Card- you can use it for travel-related or mobile wallet spending and still earn 4 mpd.

However, it’s worth noting that points earned on the DBS Woman’s World Card expire after 12 months, whereas points earned on the Citi Rewards Card are valid for up to five years. Moreover, Citi offers a much wider range of points transfer partners, including British Airways, EVA Air and Turkish Airlines. DBS cardholders are limited to just Singapore Airlines and Cathay Pacific.

For in-store shopping

If you’re more traditional and planning to do your shopping in-store, then the following cards will earn up to 4 mpd.

Card

Earn Rate

Remarks

HSBC Revolution

4 mpd

Capped at S$1,500 of dining, shopping, transport and travel per calendar month

Maybank XL Rewards Card

4 mpd

Min. spend of S$500, capped at S$1,000 of dining, shopping, travel and entertainment per calendar month

OCBC Rewards

4 mpd

Capped at S$1,110 of shopping transactions each calendar month

UOB Lady’s Card

4 mpd

Capped at S$1,000 on your choice of bonus category*

UOB Lady’s Solitaire Card

4 mpd

Capped at S$750 per category on your choice of two bonus categories*

UOB Preferred Platinum Visa

4 mpd

Capped at S$600 of contactless transactions and S$600 of online shopping transactions each calendar month

*For the purposes of Christmas shopping, ‘Fashion’ would be the safest bonus category to choose

Now, the tricky thing here is that each card has its own definition of shopping (though they will overlap to a great degree). You’ll want to refer to the terms and conditions for the exact list of eligible Merchant Category Codes (MCCs), but for ease of reference, I’ve compiled it below.

This list can look overwhelming, but don’t worry! You can look up what each of these MCCs refers to in this guide.

The MCCs which are common to all five cards are:

  • MCC 5311 Department Stores

  • MCC 5621 Women’s Ready to Wear Stores

  • MCC 5631 Women’s Accessory and Specialty Stores

  • MCC 5651 Family Clothing Stores

  • MCC 5661 Shoe Stores

  • MCC 5691 Men’s and Women’s Clothing Stores

  • MCC 5699 Misc. Apparel and Accessory Shops

Therefore, if you’re shopping at Takashimaya, TANGS, Isetan or Marks & Spencer, or buying clothes or shoes at fashion boutiques, any of these cards should work.

Moreover, these cards are not just limited to offline shopping. Generally speaking, transactions made at major e-commerce platforms should also qualify under the shopping category:

  • Amazon

  • Ezbuy

  • Shopee

  • Taobao

  • TikTok Shop

  • Lazada

I want to caveat that the MCCs of these platforms aren’t fixed, and there could be unlucky situations where the transaction does not fall under the bonus whitelist for your card.

If you want to avoid this altogether, consider buying gift cards through HeyMax, which code as MCC 5311. HeyMax currently sells gift cards for:

  • Amazon

  • Best Denki

  • Courts

  • IKEA

  • Sephora

  • SHEIN

  • TANGS

  • Zalora

For overseas shopping

If you plan to do your Christmas shopping online, with websites that charge in foreign currency, you can also make use of the following cards.

Card

Earn Rate

Remarks

Maybank XL Rewards Card

4 mpd

Min. spend of S$500, capped at S$1,000 FCY spend per calendar month

UOB Visa Signature

4 mpd

Min. spend of S$1,000, capped at S$1,200 FCY spend per statement month

Maybank World Mastercard

3.2 mpd

No cap. Min. spend of S$4,000 per calendar month. 2.8 mpd with a min. spend of S$800 per calendar month

Maybank Visa Infinite

3.2 mpd

No cap. Min. spend of S$4,000 per calendar month

The Maybank World Mastercard and Maybank Visa Infinite are particularly useful, since there is no cap on their earn rates. If you’re planning to make a big ticket purchase, then these would be the ones to choose.

Some websites may offer you the option of paying in SGD instead of foreign currency- don’t take it! This is known as dynamic currency conversion, and entails a significant mark-up from the rate your bank would otherwise charge. Furthermore, you will not earn any foreign currency spending bonuses on a foreign currency transaction that has been charged in SGD.

What about bonus caps?

Here’s a common problem: you want to purchase a big ticket item like a laptop or soundbar, only to realise that the total amount would burst the bonus cap on your credit card. And since any spending beyond the bonus cap earns just 0.4 mpd, your average earn rate will start falling precipitously!

Fortunately, there are ways of breaking up the transaction into smaller chunks that better optimise bonus caps.

The first is to use a BNPL service like Atome. Atome splits your transaction into three interest-free instalments (longer durations are possible, but entail a fee).

For example, a S$3,000 transaction would be split into three equal payments of S$1,000 each, well within the bonus cap of most of the cards I’ve mentioned so far.

All Atome transactions code as MCC 5999, so I’d recommend using the following cards to pay:

  • Citi Rewards Card (4 mpd)
  • DBS Woman’s World Card (4 mpd)
  • HSBC Revolution Card (4 mpd)

If the merchant does not partner with Atome, another option is to see if you can purchase gift cards through platforms like Amazon, Giftano, HeyMax or Wogi. By selecting denominations that fit within the bonus cap of each card, you’re effectively breaking up the transaction into smaller amounts.

Conclusion

Christmas shopping can be a great opportunity to rack up miles, provided you use the right card for the right type of transaction.

Whether you’re shopping online, in-store, or overseas, pick the card that earns 4 mpd, keep an eye on caps, avoid pitfalls like mobile wallets and DCC, and split large purchases where possible.

With a bit of planning, your holiday shopping can bring you one step closer to your next trip.
