Why Trust SingSaver

The Standard Chartered Smart Credit Card is a cashback‑focused card that delivers impressive returns for everyday lifestyle spending — dining, streaming, and commuting — offering up to 10% cashback when you spend at least S$1,500 per statement month, and 1% on other spend. Cashback is awarded via 360° Rewards Points, redeemable at a rate of 3,200 points for S$10 cashback, with no cap on earnings.

Historically, SCB’s Smart Card launched around October 2021 as a carbon‑neutral plastic card featuring a permanent fee waiver and modest bonuses, but it has since been revamped with a paid‑fee model and enhanced tiered cashback perks to stay competitive in Singapore’s cashback‑card market.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • Lower income requirement: The card is accessible at MAS’s standard minimum annual income of S$30,000 for Singaporeans/PRs (S$90,000 for foreigners).

  • Welcome offers are appealing: Through SingSaver, you can pick from gadgets, vouchers, or PayNow cash with a modest spend requirement, plus stack SC’s own SG60 cashback promos.

  • Biggest draw is lifestyle cashback: Earn up to 10% cashback (or 9.28 mpd equivalent) on fast food, streaming, and transport merchants when you hit S$1,500 monthly spend.

  • Uncapped rewards: Since December 2024, there’s no monthly cap on 360° Rewards Points, which is rare for a high-rebate cashback card.

  • Visa SmartDelay perk: Complimentary airport lounge access during delays (for you plus up to four companions) adds unexpected travel value.

  • Annual fee changes: First-year fee waiver for new sign-ups, but S$91 (ex-GST) applies from year two unless waived. Existing cardholders enjoy a waiver until December 2025.

  • Weak for general or overseas spend: Non-bonus categories earn just 0.5% cashback (0.46 mpd), and a 3.5% FCY fee makes it poor for overseas use.

  • Best fit for targeted spenders: Works well if your lifestyle already revolves around SimplyGo, Starbucks, Netflix, and similar merchants — but less so if your spending is more varied.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Up to 10 % unlimited cashback on dining, streaming, and transport when spend ≥ S$1,500/mo

  • Expanded merchant list including popular fast‑food chains, streaming platforms, EV charging

  • Visa SmartDelay offers lounge access during flight delays

  • No cap on 360° Rewards Points earnings

  • Generous redemption rate: 3,200 points = S$10

  • First‑year annual fee waiver for new applicants

  • Fee waiver for existing cardholders until 6 December 2025

  • No cash advance fee

Cons

  • Requires high monthly spends (≥ S$800 or S$1,500) to unlock meaningful bonus rates

  • Annual fee of S$91 (ex‑GST) applies from the second year for new cardholders, and from December 2025 for existing ones

  • Bonus category merchants limited to specific chains; spending at alternatives (e.g., Jollibee) won’t earn bonus

SingSaver’s take

The SC Smart Credit Card stands out as a strong cashback option for lifestyle spending in Singapore, offering high cashback potential (up to 10%) on categories like dining, streaming, and EV charging, along with Visa SmartDelay lounge access and easily redeemable rewards with no cap.

However, high minimum spends, a yearly fee (unless waiver conditions are met), and its narrow bonus merchant scope limit flexibility. While alternatives like UOB One or HSBC Live+ might offer better value for varied spending habits, the SC Smart Credit Card remains compelling for targeted high-bonus usage.

History and evolution

The SC Smart Card launched around October 2021 as a carbon‑neutral, fee‑free cashback card offering modest earn and pooling benefits. Over time, competitive pressures prompted Standard Chartered to revamp the card in December 2024 with tiered, high‑rate cashback, expanded merchants, removal of caps, and introduction of SmartDelay — but at the downside of introducing an annual fee and removing travel insurance and points pooling privileges .

Things to note

  • Limited bonus merchants: Only specific chains qualify; generic fast‑food or streaming spend — especially overseas — won’t earn bonuses.

  • Foreigners' income requirement increased to S$90,000 (from 29 March 2025)

How do SC Smart Credit Card fees work

For new cardholders, annual fee is waived in year one. After that, it’s S$91 (ex‑GST). For existing cardholders as at 6 December 2024, the annual fee is waived until 6 December 2025; thereafter the same S$91 (ex‑GST) applies.

How do SC Smart Credit Card rewards work

Rewards accumulate as 360° Rewards Points: Earn bonus cashback rates based on monthly spends in bonus categories, and base earn on all other eligible spend. Points can be redeemed for cashback (3,200 points = S$10). Points expire in up to three years.

There is no points pooling across different card groups. Transfers are possible via the 360° Rewards portal to vouchers or cashback; miles transfer partners are limited (fewer than before). Use for cashback to simplify value; alternative redemptions depend on portal availability.

Earn rates

Earn rates at a glance

  • Local spend earn rate: 0.5% cashback (1.6 points/S$1) by default; up to 10% cashback (32.0 points/S$1) on named bonus merchants with S$1,500+ total monthly spend.

  • Foreign currency spend earn rate: Base only: 0.5% cashback (1.6 points/S$1). Bonuses do not apply to FCY charges.

  • Conversion of points to miles:  34,500 points = 10,000 miles for Smart’s points bucket; transfer fee S$26.75 per conversion.

The benefits include an uncapped 8%–10% cashback on a select set of everyday SGD merchants, along with the flexibility to choose cashback or miles at the point of redemption. The downside is the steep monthly spend gates, SGD-only bonus rule, and weak base earn for non-bonus or FCY spend.

Bonus spend categories

The Smart Card offers up to 32 points per S$1 (≈9.28 mpd) on SGD transactions at these merchants:

Category

Merchants

Fast food

Burger King, Domino’s Pizza, KFC, McDonald’s, Pizza Hut, Starbucks, Subway, The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, Toast Box, Ya Kun Kaya Toast

Streaming

Amazon Prime, Disney+, HBO GO, iQiyi, Netflix, Spotify, Viu, YouTube

Transport

Electric vehicle charging (MCC 5552, until 31 December 2025), Bus/MRT via SimplyGo

  • Except for EV charging, bonuses are brand-specific. Spending at other fast food or streaming brands will not qualify.

  • Bonuses apply only when the charge is in SGD; overseas Burger King, Subway and similar transactions do not qualify.

  • EV charging must post under MCC 5552 to earn bonus points.

Broad transfer partners; miles never expire

Smart is a niche earner — outstanding for a very specific set of SGD merchants when you hit S$800/S$1,500, but weaker than mainstream miles cards for general or FCY spend.

Foreign currency fees

Standard Chartered levies a total 3.5% FCY fee on Visa/Mastercard transactions (1% scheme fee + 2.5% bank fee). Given Smart’s FCY earn is just 1.6 points/S$1 (≈0.46 mpd), the fee overwhelms the rewards — use a dedicated FCY/miles card instead. Consider SC Journey or market staples like DBS Altitude/UOB PRVI for overseas spend.

Bonus opportunities

  • Travel: 5% off Agoda hotels, 10% Booking.com wallet credits, and 12% off Expedia hotels, each with validity windows. Always check the current T&Cs before booking.

  • Dining: Resorts World Sentosa signature restaurants 15% off total bill with a minimum spend and complimentary all-day parking; The Stamford Brasserie 20% food-bill. Verify on SC’s “The Good Life” page before you go.

Note that these partner offers are not exhaustive and change frequently — always review the official SC promotions pages for current merchants, promo codes, and blackout dates.

Points redemption

360° Rewards Points features

When you spend on the SC Smart Credit Card, you’ll earn 360° Rewards Points which you can later redeem as cashback, vouchers or air miles. A few things to keep in mind:

  • Expiry: Points are valid for up to three years. It’s not a rolling three years — instead, Standard Chartered fixes the expiry date based on when you first opened your card. This means if you sign up in August 2025, all points will expire on a fixed date in 2028, regardless of when they were earned.

  • Pooling: Standard Chartered splits its cards into two groups.

    • Group 1 (Beyond, Visa Infinite, Journey) enjoys a preferential conversion of 25,000 points = 10,000 miles.

    • Group 2 (including Smart) converts at 34,500 points = 10,000 miles. Previously, points from both groups could “mix”, but that option is gone — Smart’s points now stay in Group 2, so you’ll be converting at the less favourable ratio.

  • Cancellation impact: If you cancel your Smart Card, any unused 360° Rewards Points tied to it will be forfeited. If you plan to cancel, make sure to redeem your points first.

360° Rewards Points conversion

  • Transfer minimum: 10,000 miles per conversion (i.e. 34,500 points).

  • Transfer fees: A flat fee of S$26.75 applies per transfer. To get the most out of this, wait until you’ve accumulated a larger block of points before converting.

  • Partners and transfer time: Major airline partners include KrisFlyer and Asia Miles. Transfers usually take about three working days to reflect.

If you’re a cashback lover, redeeming 3,200 points for S$10 credit gives you a straightforward return. If you’re eyeing air miles, stick to accumulating larger blocks to offset the transfer fee — and try to time redemptions when you’re ready to book flights.

360° Rewards Points bonus transactions

Bonus points are awarded when you spend in the Smart Card’s special categories: fast food, streaming subscriptions and transport (including SimplyGo and eligible EV charging). At the top tier, you’ll earn 32 points per S$1 on these merchants — a huge jump compared to the 1.6 points on general spend.

Excluded transaction categories

Certain spend types don’t earn any points at all. This includes:

  • Bill payments made via AXS or SAM kiosks

  • Insurance premiums

  • Education fees

  • Cash advances

  • Bank charges and interest

  • Balance transfers and instalment plan payments

Always double-check the bank’s exclusion list so you don’t miss out.

How points are credited

  • Credit timeframe: Base points usually post on your statement date, while bonus points are credited the following day.

  • Calculation method: Transactions are rounded down to the nearest S$1 before points are applied.

  • Non-rounded transactions: For example, a S$37.99 charge is treated as S$37, so you won’t earn points on that extra 99 cents.

360° Rewards Points expiry

Unlike some banks where points expire on a rolling basis, SC fixes an end date for your points “bucket”. It could be sooner than three years if you sign up mid-cycle, so keep an eye on the date in your account.

Points accumulation examples

Let’s compare a simple case:

  • Spend S$5 at Starbucks (bonus category, ≥ S$1,500 monthly spend).

    • You earn 160 points (≈46 miles) + 1,440 bonus points (≈418 miles) = ≈464 miles or 10% cashback.

  • Spend S$9.99 on Netflix (bonus category, ≥ S$800 monthly spend).

    • Rounded down to S$9 → 9 × 25.6 points = 230 points = ≈66 miles or about 8% cashback.

Contrast this with general-spend miles cards like DBS Altitude (≈12 miles on S$9.99) or UOB PRVI Miles (≈14 miles on S$9.99). The Smart Card really shines only in its bonus categories.

Other important details

  • Formula for calculating points:

    • Local general spend (< S$1,500): 1.6 points × amount in S$ (rounded down).

    • Local general spend (≥ S$1,500): 3.2 points × amount in S$.

    • Bonus spend (≥ S$800): 25.6 points × amount in S$.

    • Bonus spend (≥ S$1,500): 32 points × amount in S$.

  • Foreign currency spend: earns only 1.6 points per S$1 equivalent, and remember the 3.5% FCY fee.

Asia Miles

Cards in Standard Chartered’s Group 1 — like Visa Infinite or Journey — still enjoy the better ratio of 25,000 points = 10,000 miles, but Smart belongs to Group 2, so it uses the 34,500 ratio.

Transfer costs

A flat S$26.75 (inclusive of GST) applies per transfer, regardless of the number of points or miles converted.

Minimum transfer amount

You must move at least 34,500 points at a time to get 10,000 KrisFlyer or Asia Miles.

Transfer time

Officially, transfers may take up to five working days, though some users report that KrisFlyer and Asia Miles transfers often complete in around three working days.

Transfer issues to watch out for

  • Limited partners: No more Qantas, AirAsia, Emirates, etc. — only KrisFlyer and Asia Miles now.

  • Fixed Group-specific ratio: Smart (Group 2) has poorer value than premium SC cards.

  • Non-refundable: Once you convert points to miles, you can’t reverse the transaction.

  • Expiry risk: Points still expire on a fixed schedule, so don’t wait too long to transfer.

Income tax payment

Income Tax Payment Facility

Standard Chartered allows cardholders to settle their annual IRAS bill using SC EasyBill. This facility lets you charge the tax payment to your SC Smart Credit Card and pay IRAS indirectly.

  • Payment option: SC EasyBill

  • Earn rate for income tax payments: 1.6 points per S$1 (≈0.46 mpd) if your monthly spend is below S$1,500; 3.2 points per S$1 (≈0.93 mpd) if you’re in the top tier. EasyBill transactions do not count as “bonus category” spend, so you won’t get the 8–10% cashback.

  • Fee for income tax payments: 1.9% processing fee charged on the transaction amount.

Paying your tax through EasyBill can be a way to earn some rewards on an otherwise unrewarded spend. But the value depends heavily on whether you prefer cashback or miles, and whether you can beat the cost of the 1.9% fee.

Comparison with other providers

Here’s how SC stacks up against some other popular bank tax payment facilities:

Fee

Earn rate

Cost per mile

Notes

SC Smart (EasyBill)

1.9%

0.46–0.93 mpd

~2.0–4.1¢

Works for cashback, but very weak for miles. Bonus categories don’t apply.

DBS Altitude (PayAll)

2.2%

1.2–1.3 mpd

~1.7–1.8¢

Straightforward, good choice if you’re topping up KrisFlyer miles.

UOB PRVI Miles (ipaymy / CardUp)

2.25%

1.4 mpd

~1.6¢

One of the cheapest routes to buy miles via tax. Reliable for big payments.

Citi PremierMiles (PayAll)

2.6%

1.2 mpd

2.17¢

Frequent promos (fee waivers or bonus miles) can improve value further.

ipaymy (general, using miles cards)

~1.75%–2.25%

Depends on card (e.g. 1.2–1.6 mpd)

~1.2–1.8¢

Often runs limited-time promo codes that drop the fee, making miles cheaper.

CardUp (general, using miles cards)

~1.75%–2.25%

Depends on card (e.g. 1.2–1.6 mpd)

~1.2–1.8¢

Similar to ipaymy; good for stacking with miles cards that reward all online payments.

If your goal is cashback, EasyBill may be acceptable — but the 1.9% fee cancels out much of the benefit, unless you’re gunning for the annual fee waiver via spend. For miles chasers, Smart is simply not competitive: 0.46–0.93 mpd at ~2–4¢ per mile is poor value compared to DBS, UOB or Citi, where cost per mile hovers closer to 1.6–1.8¢.

Other benefits

Visa SmartDelay

A nice surprise in 2025 is that the SC Smart Credit Card now comes with Visa SmartDelay. Here’s how it works:

  • If your flight is delayed by two hours or more, you and up to four registered travel companions get complimentary access to over 1,000 airport lounges worldwide.

  • You’ll need to pre-register your flight via the SmartDelay portal before travelling. If the delay happens, lounge access codes will be emailed to you.

  • There’s no charge, and unlike traditional lounge memberships, you don’t have to worry about minimum spend or status levels.

This perk is rare for a cashback card, and it adds good lifestyle value for anyone who flies a few times a year.

Other SC Smart Credit Card benefits

  • Travel benefits

    • Seasonal discounts on platforms like Trip.com, Agoda and Traveloka, often ranging from 5%–10% off hotel or flight bookings when you pay with your Standard Chartered card.

  • Dining benefits

    • Access to SC’s The Good Life dining programme, which includes rotating offers such as:

      • 15% off at Resorts World Sentosa’s signature restaurants with a minimum spend (plus complimentary parking).

      • 20% off at selected hotel restaurants like The Stamford Brasserie.

    • These promos change frequently, but they’re a good way to save on special nights out.

The list above isn’t exhaustive. Banks rotate merchant tie-ups all the time, and blackout dates can apply, especially around public holidays and festive seasons. Always check the official Standard Chartered promotions page before making reservations or purchases to avoid disappointment.

Should you get the Standard Chartered Smart Credit Card?

In conclusion, the SC Smart Credit Card is a take-it-or-leave-it option, because of its high cashback potential on specific everyday merchants, its no-cap rewards structure, and the steep spend thresholds needed to unlock top earn rates. This card makes the most sense for cashback-oriented spenders who can consistently hit S$800–S$1,500 a month at the named merchants. If that’s you, Smart can be very rewarding; if not, a broader cashback or miles card will likely serve you better.
