Need to deposit your cash or cheque but the bank has closed? Don’t worry, there’s still cash deposit machines, and some ATMs accept cheques too. Read on to find out what to do.
Steps to follow when depositing cash at an ATM
-
Find a Cash Deposit Machine (CDM)
Use your bank’s mobile app or website to locate nearby machines. Some ATMs only allow withdrawals, so make sure you're heading to a CDM that accepts cash deposits. Also, confirm that it accepts the note denominations you plan to deposit.
It’s not cash and not a cheque, so what is a cashier’s order?
Understand how a cashier’s orders work and how they compare to other payment methods.
-
Get your cash ready
Arrange your notes neatly. Most CDMs accept S$10, S$50, and S$100 bills. Remove any rubber bands, staples, or paper clips to prevent the machine from rejecting your cash. -
Insert your card or go cardless
You can either insert your ATM or debit card and enter your PIN, or use the cardless option if supported — this usually requires your mobile number or bank login credentials. -
Choose the deposit function
Once logged in, select the 'Cash Deposit' option. Then choose the account you want the cash to go into. -
Feed the notes into the machine
Place your notes into the slot provided. The CDM will automatically count the amount and display it on-screen for your confirmation. -
Verify and confirm
Make sure the amount shown is correct. If it is, go ahead and confirm the transaction. A receipt will be printed for your records. -
Take your card and receipt
Don’t forget to retrieve your card and receipt before you leave.
Depositing cash with online-only banks
If you’re using an online-only bank, the steps will vary slightly:
-
Check what deposit methods are available
Online banks often partner with traditional banks to offer deposit services. Use your bank’s app or site to find CDMs that are compatible. -
Visit the supported CDM
Head to the listed partner bank’s CDM. These machines will allow you to make a deposit to your online bank account through special options in the menu. -
Verify the deposit
Always check that the money reflects in your account shortly after. Keep the receipt just in case there are any issues.
Can you deposit cheques at ATMs?
Some ATMs allow cheque deposits, but in most cases, it's more efficient to find at CDM. These machines are typically found at bank branches, often right beside the ATM.
-
Locate a cheque-accepting machine
Use your bank’s app or website to check which locations offer cheque deposit services. DBS, UOB, and OCBC all have CDMs for this purpose. -
Fill out your cheque properly
Before heading to the machine, ensure the cheque is completely filled in — including the payee name, amount in words and figures, date, and your signature. On the reverse side, write your full name, contact number, and account number. Remember, unlike with an in-person bank teller, there is no one to advise you if you missed something out, so be extra careful! -
Use the machine
Insert your bank card or use the cardless method if available. Choose 'Cheque Deposit' and follow the instructions. Insert only one cheque at a time. -
Check the scanned image
Some machines will display a scanned copy of your cheque for verification. Review the details, confirm the deposit, and collect your receipt. -
Allow time for processing
Cheque deposits are not immediate. Most clear within one to two working days, but anything deposited after the daily cut-off (usually 3.30pm) will be processed the next working day.
Staying safe while using ATMs
It’s always a good idea to practise basic security when using ATMs:
-
Cover your hand when entering your PIN.
-
Be alert to your surroundings, especially in the evening or at quieter locations.
-
If anything about the ATM seems suspicious or looks tampered with, do not use it — notify the bank immediately.
-
Keep your receipts until you've confirmed the deposit is successful. You can also take a photo of them for extra security.
Extra advice for cash and cheque deposits
Know your deposit limits
Each bank sets daily deposit limits. If you're depositing a large sum, you may want to visit a physical branch instead.
Use clean, undamaged notes
CDMs may reject torn or crumpled notes. Smooth them out beforehand to reduce the chance of rejection.
Follow instructions for cheque deposits
Some banks, like OCBC, offer ATMs that accept cheques. Be sure to endorse the cheque on the back and follow the on-screen prompts closely to avoid any issues.
