It’s September, which means it’s time for Apple to grace us with the latest iteration of its most successful product ever, the iPhone. Now in its 17th incarnation, Apple’s newest smartphones will be released in three versions – iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro, along with a brand-new slimmer and lighter model, the iPhone Air.
So, what does the iPhone 17 have to offer? And should you take the plunge?

The iPhone 17 may be the entry-level model, but don’t dismiss it just yet. This is the first non-Pro model to get a Pro feature: It comes with ProMotion display with up to 120Hz refresh rate, a feature previously only reserved for iPhone Pros.
Further closing the gap with the higher-end Pro lineup is the camera system – iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro and the iPhone Air all come with identical 18MP Center Stage cameras in the front. For the rear cameras, all three are installed with the 48MP Fusion system, differing only in number of lenses – iPhone 17 has two, the Pro variants have three, and the iPhone Air has only one lens.
Another thing to like is the new-gen A19 chip. Although it is a step lower than the A19 Pro chips used in its more advanced siblings, it nonetheless packs plenty of processing power in its 6-core CPU + 5-core GPU architecture.
iPhone 17 is the smallest of the lineup, with a screen size coming in at 6.3 inches. The device features an aluminum frame, and comes in five colours, Black, White and Lavender, Sage and Mist Blue – the last three being more muted versions of the iPhone 16’s Pink, Teal and Ultramarine.

This year’s flagship model, the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max, remain unchanged in size, 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch respectively. Everything else is new.
From the brand-new A19 Pro chip (claimed to be capable of MacBook Pro-level AI computing power), to a first-ever aluminum unibody, never-before-seen liquid-cooling vapor chamber (for a smartphone that is), and an arresting, fashionable new orange tint.
Other differentiators are the expanded storage capacity, maxing out at 1TB for the 17 Pro, and a whopping 2TB for the 17 Pro Max. These upgrades, of course, come at a premium.
With the iPhone 17 boasting capabilities and specs closer to the Pro and Pro Max than before, Apple’s luxury flagship model is now firmly entrenched being for superfans only. If you have the moolah, by all means go ahead and splurge. But if the Pro lineup remains a little too rich for your liking, the regular iPhone 17 has never looked to be a more alluring alternative.
iPhone Air
Display |
6.5-inch with ProMotion up to 120Hz |
Capacity |
256GB, 512GB, 1TB |
Construction |
Titanium frame, Ceramic Shield 2 (front), Ceramic Shield (back) |
Battery life |
Up to 27 hours video playback |
Processor |
A19 chip, 5-core GPU |
Camera |
Front: 18MP Center Stage Rear: 48MP Fusion Main Optical zoom: 1x, 2x |
Colours |
Sky Blue, Light Gold, Cloud White, Space Black |
Halfway between the iPhone 17 and the iPhone 17 Pro comes the iPhone Air, which is Apple’s slimmest and lightest iPhone yet. The iPhone Air gets its lightness from its all-titanium frame, a metal with a higher strength-to-weight ratio than aluminium. )So you shouldn't have to worry about reliving 2014’s infamous Bendgate).
Judging by press photos the iPhone Air looks the best among all three models, with a minimalistic look, sleek and shiny edges, and a delightfully airy colour selection. No doubt, the iPhone Air stands out as this year’s best example of Apple’s iconic design language.
However, in exchange this model inherits certain limitations in terms of hardware capabilities. While it is powered by the A19 Pro chip, the iPhone Air has only one rear camera lens on the 48MP Fusion camera system. Its slim silhouette also means less battery volume – resulting in up to 27 hours of video playback (Apple’s benchmark for battery life), the lowest among all iPhone 17 variants.
