Golf courses in Singapore are great, but it's there's nothing like a trip to our neighbouring countries for a tee and change of scenery. Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia have a number of stunning golf courses that are often less expensive than Singapore.

Here's a tip: you can get complimentary green fees at over 40 golf clubs around South-East Asia with the American Express Platinum Credit Card. Your supplementary cardholders will enjoy the same privileges as well.

1. The Els Club in Langakawi, Malaysia

golfcourse1

Just located right next to the Andaman Sea in Langkawi, The Els Club Teluk Datai is beautiful 18-hole par 72 golf spot with a view of the Mat Chinchang Mountain range. It is a fairly new course, just over a year old, with fairways of grass and trees instead of sand due to the monsoon seasons.

Usual Golf Rates: RM650

Address: Jalan Teluk Datai, Kuah, Langkawi, 07000 Kedah, Malaysia

2. Kota Permai Golf in Selangar, Malaysia

golfcourse2

Just a half an hour drive from Kuala Lumpur and a four-hour drive from Singapore, this 170-acre golf course was designed by Australian architect Ross Watson. What’s wonderful about the Kota Permai is the lack of blind spots or extremely elevated greens. When the Malaysian Open was held here in 2008, it was widely praised.

Usual Golf Rates: RM434.60

Address: No. 1, Jalan 31/100A, Kota Kemuning, Section 31, 40460 Shah Alam, Selangor Darul Ehsan, Malaysia

3. Horizon Hills Golf in Johor Bahru, Malaysia

golfcourse3

Horizon Hills Golf is probably the nearest golf course to Singapore on this list, and perfect for a weekend getaway. Designed again by Ross Watson—who has a few Malaysian golf courses under his belt—this course is known for its signature 17th hole, where you’ll have to play across water to an island green.

Usual Golf Rates: RM387.20

Address: No. 1 Jalan Eka, Horizon Hills, 79100 Iskandar Puteri, Johor Darul Takzim, Malaysia

4. Alpine Golf Club in Pathumthani, Thailand

golfcourse4

Alpine Golf Club is just a 20-minute drive from Don Muang Airport in Bangkok. It has been labelled as one of the most challenging golf courses in Thailand, with complicated plays on the greens especially during wet weather.

Usual Golf Rates: 3,300 baht

Usual Golf Rates: 3,600 baht
