Can’t Afford Beerfest? Here are 5 Alternatives this Weekend

Thirsty for craft beers but don’t want to spend on Beerfest tickets? These places wouldn’t hurt your wallet (that much).

That time of the year has come again: beer vendors push out their malty concoctions to the public, while the live band covers everything rock –from the Beatles to Bon Jovi.

But if you’re anything like us and think paying S$28 – S$40 to purchase tickets at the door – is too steep, when it’s just to get into the event just to fork out more cash for beers inside, you might need an alternative plan for the weekend. One that involves more affordable craft beers.

Round up the gang, because there are places that still exist in Singapore that wouldn’t cost a bomb just to get a beer other than Tiger Draught.

1. Nectars and Vine

Nectars and Vine

This unassuming bar in Upper Serangoon Road doesn’t serve anything on tap. But if you’re craving for Ginger Beer (we’re talking about the alcoholic variety) or a beer no one’s heard of, you might just find it in one of its many fridges.

Bottled beers start from S$3.50. If you’re drinking there, you’ll have to pay an additional 10% for service charge. But takeaways are very much welcome too.

Address: 752 Upper Serangoon Rd, Singapore 534623

2. Bottles & Taps

Bottles & Taps

Just a stone’s throw away from Nectars and Vine is another bar that serves and delivers craft beers. The beers in Bottles & Taps vary according to season, but there are usually over 40 types of craft beers to choose from.

The beers cost from S$10 to S$16 a pop. They might not be the cheapest in the market, but their promotions make up for it. Right now you can get 3 beers for S$28, 4 for S$38, and 5 for S$48.

Address: 1C Yio Chu Kang Road, Singapore 545509

3. Beer is Food

Beer is Food

Craving hawker food but have an extreme thirst for craft beer? Beer is Food is housed in Golden Mile Food Centre, right next to some of the best hawker food in Singapore.

Ciders and craft beers start from S$8. Plus, if you eat there, your dinner is going to be cheap – that means more money for beers!

Address: #B1-55 Golden Mile Food Centre, 505 Beach Rd, Singapore 199583

4. Thirsty Craft Beer Shop

Thirsty Craft Beer Shop

Within the boozey streets of Clarke Quay lies a quieter, and more importantly affordable, craft beer bar. Thirsty Craft Beer Shop, on the second floor of Liang Court, is another bar cum beer delivery service in Singapore.

With beers like Fruli Strawberry Beer, Schneider Weisse and Wells Banana Bread costing under S$10, you can party like you’re at Beerfest without the crowds (although some might argue that the crowds are what makes the party).

There are two other branches of Thirsty Craft Beer Shop in Tiong Bahru and Holland Village.

Address: 177 River Valley Road, #02-34, Liang Court Shopping Centre, Singapore 179030

5. The Jazz Bar in Southbridge Hotel

The Jazz Bar

Located within the boutique Southbridge Hotel, The Jazz Bar serves only two types of beer on tap: Tiger and Archipelago.

But Archipelago Craft Beer is a Beerfest staple, and the Jazz Bar serves it cheap, at S$10 a pint all night long. You’ll find all four beers – the Bohemian Lager, the Belgium Wit, the Summer Ale, and the Irish Ale – together with the current limited edition Archipelago here.

Address: 210 South Bridge Rd, Singapore 058759

You can also save money on beer with a dining credit card like the American Express Platinum Card, which gets you complimentary welcome drinks at the hippest pubs in Singapore!
