We round up 6 unique Yu Sheng platters for Chinese New Year 2021, specially designed for you to toss up some luck for the coming Year of the Ox.

Lo Hei is a uniquely Singaporean tradition for Chinese New Year, where groups will toss Yu Sheng, which is shredded vegetables and raw fish in the air, while reciting specific blessings. This is done in the hopes of achieving better fortune (we didn’t mean for that to sound so ritualistic). There is even a common belief that the higher you toss your Yu Sheng, the “greater your heights (achievements)” in the coming year.

While most traditional Yu Sheng platters come served with classic components like preserved shredded vegetables, sesame seeds, “golden” crackers, and plum sauce, restaurants have started giving their own spin to the dish to attract curious customers who are intrigued by novelty.

Here are some of the more notable ones on the menu for Chinese Niu Year 2021.

The Yu Sheng ingredients are artfully arranged into an image of a bull, and uses champagne jelly, shallot oil and kumquat dressing to create a striking balance of rich and refreshing flavours.

For families with young children, you’d be glad to know that there’s even a special children’s version available, which features an endearing representation of a playful calf.
