Korea Travel Guide – Where to Go and What to See

Seoul

SeoulThe capital city of South Korea, Seoul is a thriving megacity that offers up several fascinating facets for visitors to explore. As the business, technological and cultural hub of the country, you’ll encounter a heady mix of cutting-edge modernity interspersed with deeply rooted history and timeworn customs. From stately palaces to flourishing gardens, bustling markets to buzzing nightlife, vibrant shopping to world-class cuisines, there’s a rich vivacity to be savoured at every turn.

Busan

BusanWhile the hit Korean thriller Train to Busan no doubt highlighted the titular city to a new generation of adventurers, Busan has long been enjoying quiet renown among worshippers of the sun and sea. Korea’s busiest port, Busan, is renowned for fresh seafood, beautiful beaches and idyllic coffee-overlooking-the-sea vibes. It is a popular summertime destination, but the city’s many charms make Busan well worth a visit all year round.

Gyeongju

Gyeonju, Photo by Seongho Jang on UnsplashFor history buffs, a visit to Gyeonju is a must. Chock-full of ancient architecture and historical monuments, Gyeonju wears its status as the ancient capital of the Kingdom of Silla proudly on its sleeve. With among the highest concentration of temples, ancient forests, palace ruins and other historical artefacts, it’s no wonder Gyeongju is also referred to as “the museum without walls”.

Jeonju

Jeonju, Photo by m h on UnsplashLocated in western South Korea, Jeonju comfortably straddles the line between urban and rural. It is best known for the Jeonju Hanok Heritage Village, which features lovingly preserved traditional Korean-style houses, centuries-old pavilions with sweeping views, and museums showcasing the making of local rice wines. Jeonju is also regarded as one of the country’s gastronomic hubs for classic Korean dishes, so be sure to check out the local restaurants here.

Daejeon

DaejeonSouth Korea’s very own Silicon Valley, Daejeon is the research and innovation hub of the country. Among its attractions are the Expo Science Park, where you can catch a panoramic view of the city thanks to the Hanbit Tower, which is also the location of the popular Moonlit Picnic Festival. Other leisure activities include mountain cycling on Mount Gyejoksan, a rejuvenating dip at Yuseong Spa, and catching the autumn colours on Gubongsan.

Jeollanam-do

Making up the southernmost quarter of the Korean peninsula, Joellanam-do is an agricultural province steeped in natural beauty and a rustic way of life. It is the ideal destination for those looking for a slow-paced holiday, brimming with the abundance of nature. The Joella region is also known for its rich and complex dishes, with roots traceable to the royal kitchens of old.

Jeju Island

Jeju IslandKorea’s largest island, Jeju Island is one of the country’s most popular destinations – both for tourists and locals. Among the island’s many charms are its dramatic volcanic landscape, verdant forests, powder-sand beaches and temperate weather. Jeju also has a reputation for fresh, natural produce, thanks to its rich volcanic soil and teeming coastlines.

Daecheong-do (Blue Island)

Daecheong-do, sometimes also known as the Big Blue Island, is another unspoiled gem for nature lovers to explore. At just slightly over 12 sq km, the charming little island is known for its fishing activities. Worth visiting for the marine village vibes and photo-taking opportunities.

Naejangsan

NaejangsanThose who love mountain hiking and nature exploration should make a pit stop at Naejangsan. Located in Jeolla province, the national park is renowned for its sweeping views of unspoiled nature and beginner-friendly hiking trails. Come autumn, the entire region becomes awash in orange and scarlet, offering visitors a vivid and memorable sight.

Daegu

One of the largest cities in Korea, Daegu draws upon its rich and ancient history for a distinctive atmosphere all its own. It is most famous for its Daegu Yangnyeongsi Orientail Medical Cultural Center, where visitors can learn about the 350-year history of oriental medicine and shop for traditional remedies and herbal products at the wholesale market. Other highlights include the stunning Duryu Park – a famous cherry blossom viewing hotspot during Spring; Seonbosa Temple – dating back to the 9th century; and Daegu Spa Valley – where families can enjoy healing spa waters together.
