Supermarket Promos and Discounts for Senior Citizens (2022)

Nobody likes growing older, but hey, let’s look on the bright side — you’re finally eligible for senior citizen discounts, which can help you and your family save some money. 

One such place where seniors get to enjoy great discounts is at the supermarket, where you can buy all your groceries and essentials for cheap. You may age, but shopping at supermarkets doesn't grow old (geddit?). 

Here are all the senior citizen discounts available at major chain supermarkets in Singapore, which days they’re available, and how to save more on top of the given promotions. 

TL;DR: Every single supermarket discount for senior citizens 2022

Every weekday: NTUC (2%, 3% and 5% off) and Giant (3% off storewide)

Tuesdays & Wednesdays: Sheng Siong (3% off storewide)

Mondays & Fridays: Prime Supermarket (3% off storewide)

Wednesdays only: Cold Storage (3% off storewide)

You must be at least 60 years old to qualify for supermarket discounts

As stated in the Senior Citizen Act of Singapore, anyone who is at least 60 years of age is considered a senior citizen and is eligible for these benefits. While the Act only considers those aged 60 years and above as seniors, certain establishments in the country grant discounts to individuals as young as 55 years old. 

Types of senior citizen discounts available at supermarkets and how to know if you’re qualified

General senior citizen discount

• Any Singaporean or PR aged 60 and above is eligible

Pioneer Generation (PG) discount

According to MOH, citizens are considered PG if they: 

• Were born on or before 31 December 1949, and 
• Became a Singapore citizen on or before 31 December 1986

If you’re unsure of whether you/your parents are considered Pioneer Generation, you may check your status via the LifeSG app or by logging into Singpass.

Merdeka Generation (MG) discount 

According to MOH, citizens are considered MG if they:

• Were born from 1 January 1950 to 31 December 1959, and 
• Became a Singapore citizen on or before 31 December 1996

OR

• Were born on or before 31 December 1949, and 
• Became a Singapore citizen on or before 31 December 1996

There are no supermarket discounts for senior citizens in Singapore on weekends (Saturdays and Sundays). 

Senior citizen discounts at NTUC FairPrice

Whether you are a senior citizen, Pioneer Generation (PG), Merdeka Generation (MG), CHAS Blue Cardmember, you can enjoy special discounts on designated shopping days for you.

Link members will receive 0.50 Linkpoints with every S$1 spend with no minimum spend. 

Families can shop on behalf of Pioneer Generation seniors till 30 June 2022 at NTUC FairPrice

From now till 30 June 2022, family members can help PG seniors purchase groceries on their behalf at 3% discount on Mondays and Wednesdays. You will need to present the PG card of your kin when you shop.

NTUC FairPrice’s newest initiative — 5% ‘Stretch Your Dollar’ Discount Scheme

On 4 March 2022, NTUC FairPrice introduced the 5% ‘Stretch Your Dollar’ Discount Scheme, where everyone can get 5% off more than 100 key essential items across all FairPrice stores and FairPrice Online every Friday until the end of 2022. 

And by everyone, we literally mean EVERYONE. Regardless of age, you are entitled to buy daily household staples like rice, oil, eggs, milk, vegetables, meat, laundry and paper products at a 5% discount.

Senior citizen discounts at Sheng Siong

To get a senior discount at Sheng Siong is fairly simple — simply present your NRIC on Tuesdays and Wednesdays to enjoy 3% off your grocery bill. 

However, there are some exclusions. The discount is not applicable for: 

• Infant milk powder
• Tobacco
• Alcohol products
• Parking coupons
• Phone cards
• Medical products and devices (includes ART test kits)
• Lottery products
• Sheng Siong shopping vouchers

Senior citizen discounts at Prime Supermarket

Can’t shop at Sheng Siong on Tuesdays and Wednesdays? Prime Supermarket’s got your back with the same 3% off storewide for Singaporean and PR senior citizens aged 60 and above on Mondays and Fridays. 

Unlike NTUC FairPrice, which allows families to buy on behalf of their seniors, seniors have to be physically present at the store and show their NRIC to enjoy the discount. 

A few things to take note: 

• There is also no minimum spending required
• Purchases made with the senior citizen discount are not entitled to earn points. However, redemption of Prime$ is allowed
• The discount cannot be used to purchase tobacco products, alcohol, stage 1 & 2 milk powder, Big Sweep, Prime gift vouchers, as well as magazines and newspapers

Senior citizen discounts at Cold Storage

Only available on Wednesdays, Cold Storage allows senior citizens aged 60 and above to enjoy 3% off storewide when they shop in-store at any of their outlets. You just have to flash your IC to get the discount. 

Similar to the previous supermarkets, you cannot get a discount on the following items: 

• Tobacco and cigarettes
• Infant milk powder
• Phone cards
• Dairy Farm gift vouchers
• Lottery and purchases from concessionaires

Also, the 3% discount will not be applicable on top of the 10% off house brands & corporate brands for UOB Delight Cardmembers, and it is not applicable for Cold Storage Online.

Senior citizen discounts at Giant

Hooray for Giant, for they have 3% off storewide for Singaporean and PR senior citizens aged 60 and above every single weekday till the end of 2022. 

Simply show your NRIC to be eligible and bring along your PAssion Card to get points as well!

They have the same exclusions as Cold Storage (sister companies, after all) and you cannot get a discount on the following items: 

• Tobacco and cigarettes
• Infant milk powder
• Phone cards
• Dairy Farm gift vouchers
• Lottery and purchases from concessionaires

Giant’s senior citizen discount is not applicable for Giant Online.
