Saver takeaways
  • AmEx offers travel insurance through your card or as a standalone policy.

  • AmEx cards typically include coverage for delays, interruptions, trip cancellations, baggage, and more.

  • The coverage for Amex tends to be secondary.

  • Policies vary by card.

American Express does have travel insurance and offers two options: standalone plans for direct purchase and complimentary benefits on select AmEx cards.

If you're considering travel insurance for an upcoming trip, familiarise yourself with the AmEx travel benefits included with your credit cards. Understanding your existing coverage helps avoid unnecessary spending on duplicate policies.

Understanding the difference: AmEx travel insurance vs. AmEx card coverage

An independent AmEx travel insurance policy might offer more comprehensive coverage, but your AmEx card's travel perks may suffice, depending on your needs.

If your primary concern is specific coverage for cancellations, delays, or rental cars and baggage, your card's benefits are likely adequate.

However, for those mainly concerned with emergency medical coverage while traveling or for those who want wider coverage on their trip, a separate travel insurance policy is recommended.

You can purchase this from American Express Singapore directly or explore other travel insurance providers. Special promotions or referral codes may even defray some of the costs of purchasing travel insurance.

Trip cancellation and curtailment coverage

Trip cancellation coverage protects you if you must cancel your trip for a covered reason, reimbursing nonrefundable payments made with your AmEx Platinum Card.

Numerous exclusions exist, so review your coverage terms carefully.

  1. Claims less than S$150.

  2. Claims arising directly or indirectly from circumstances known to the Insured Person prior to booking his Trip.

  3. Claims arising from any condition (i) for which a Doctor was consulted or for which treatment or medication was prescribed or (ii) the manifestation or symptoms of which a reasonable person in the circumstances would be expected to be aware of, prior to the Insured Person booking his Trip or his Card Commencement Date, whichever the more recent.

  4. Additional costs incurred if the Insured Person fails to notify the providers of his travel, accommodation, excursions and leisure activities immediately if it is necessary that he cancels his Trip.

  5. Claims where the Insured Person is unable to supply a medical certificate from a Doctor confirming the medical condition which made it necessary to cancel his Trip.

For enhanced trip cancellation coverage, consider "Cancel For Any Reason" (CFAR) travel insurance. CFAR is an optional upgrade on some standalone plans, offering partial refunds for cancellations regardless of the reason.

American Express travel insurance: Standalone plans

If you don't hold any of the aforementioned credit cards and are considering purchasing an AmEx travel insurance policy, or simply wish to compare prices to assess if a standalone policy offers better benefits, you can visit the AmEx travel insurance website and enter your trip details for a quote.

To demonstrate available plans, we entered sample details for a 10 day trip for a 35-year-old Singapore single to Japan. The results showed three plan options, ranging from S$79 for an Essential plan to S$125 for a Superior plan

Global medical protection

Medical protection covers emergency healthcare and dental expenses, as well as medical evacuation and repatriation of remains. Coverage limits increase with higher-priced plans. If medical protection is important to you, a standalone travel insurance policy is recommended.

Travel accident protection

Travel accident protection provides coverage in case of death or dismemberment during travel. While this is a sensitive topic, it's essential to be aware of this coverage. For AmEx travel insurance the coverage provided for accidental death and dismemberment can be up to S$500,000 for the Superior plan.

Other policy benefits also included on AmEx cards

These standalone coverage elements are offered on the mentioned AmEx cards, though limits may vary.

Trip cancellation

The Basic plan covers trip cancellation up to S$5,000 for the Basic plan while the Standard plan covers S$10,000 with the Superior plan covering up to S$20,000. In contrast, the AmEx Platinum card tops out at $10,000 for travel insurance coverage.

Trip curtailment

Trip curtailment coverage ranges from S$5,000 for the Basic plan, S$10,000 for the Standard plan and S$20,000 for the Superior plan. The AmEx Platinum cards travel insurance benefit offering trip curtailment is capped at S$10,000 per covered trip.

Baggage coverage

This benefit compensates for lost or stolen luggage as well as baggage delays. AmEx standalone travel insurance covers up to S$8,000, max. S$500 per item, S$1,000 for laptop. For baggage delays the coverage is S$200 per 6 consecutive hours, for a maximum of S$2,400.

Trip delay

This benefit reimburses necessary expenses for trip delays. AmEx’s standalone travel insurance tops out at $200 per 6 consecutive hours, max. $2,400 for the Superior plan. This coverage is also included on premium AmEx cards.

Is it better to use complimentary benefits or buy a separate policy?

AmEx cards provide key travel insurance benefits: trip cancellation and interruption insurance, trip delay insurance, baggage insurance, and Global Assist. However, the coverage provided may not be as extensive as those provided by the standalone AmEx travel insurance plans.

The coverage limits in AmEx's travel insurance policy are similar to those on AmEx cards, so it's advisable to compare options to ensure the benefits meet your needs.
