There are several types of miles credit card promotions available, each designed to incentivize new cardholders and encourage higher spending. Some common types of miles credit card promotions include the following:
Miles sign-up bonus
When new cardholders sign up for a miles credit card, a significant number of welcome bonus miles or points are awarded to those who meet a minimum spending requirement within a specified timeframe following card approval. An example of this can look like spending a minimum of S$500 within 2 months of card approval.
Accelerated miles earn rate
Some promotions provide higher earning rates on specific spending categories, such as travel, dining, groceries, or online shopping. Cardholders can earn more miles or points per dollar spent in these categories.
Limited time offers
Banks may introduce limited-time offers where cardholders can earn extra bonus miles or points for a specific period or during a particular season, such as holidays or travel-related events. For instance, the Citi PremierMiles Card and DBS Altitude Card periodically offer boosted miles earned on Agoda, Kaligo, or Expedia bookings.
Referral bonus
Cardholders can earn bonus miles or points by referring friends or family members to apply for the same credit card and get approved.
Partner promotions
Banks may collaborate with partner airlines, hotels, or retailers to offer exclusive promotions where cardholders can earn bonus miles or points on their eligible cards with these partners.
The eligibility requirements to participate in a miles bonus credit card promotion can vary depending on the bank and the specific promotion. However, some common eligibility requirements are as follows below:
New cardholders only
Many miles bonus promotions are targeted at new-to-bank customers applying for a specific bank’s credit card for the first time. Existing cardholders or those who have had the same credit card before are excluded from the bonus.
Minimum spending requirements
Most welcome bonus miles promotions have a minimum spending requirement within a specific timeframe (e.g., spend $3,000 in the first three months). Ensure you can meet this spending threshold before the eligibility period ends.
No prior bonus
If you have received a bonus for the same credit card in the past, you may not be eligible for another bonus.
To participate in a credit card bonus miles promotion and earn the offered bonus miles, follow these steps below:
Check eligibility
Review the promotion's terms and conditions to ensure you meet all the eligibility requirements, such as being a new cardholder, meeting the minimum age, credit score criteria, annual income requirement, and possessing the relevant documents for sign-up if you’re unable to apply via SingPass.
Meet the spend requirements
After receiving the credit card, start using it to make purchases. Ensure you meet the minimum spending requirement within the specified timeframe to qualify for the bonus miles. Be sure to keep track of the promotion’s timeframe too.
Ensure you’ve applied for the right credit card
Select a credit card that aligns with your spending habits and travel preferences. Look for one that offers a bonus miles promotion that suits your needs.
Monitor miles expiry dates
Take note of any expiry dates associated with the bonus miles or points. Most of them come with an expiry unless stated otherwise (e.g. Citi Miles, DBS Points, 90°N Miles don’t expire). So ensure you redeem the miles for flights, rebates, or other experiences and rewards before they expire.
