Tokio Marine’s TM Xplora Plus Travel Insurance Review: Great Hospitalisation Coverage

Tokio Marine’s TM Xplora Plus Travel Insurance might become your go-to policy because of its default COVID-19 coverage with no add-on required, decent hospitalisation coverage and other miscellaneous covers.

Tokio Marine’s TM Xplora Plus Travel Insurance offers two tiers of coverage — Classic and Premier that differ in the level of coverage.

Though their prices are rather steep, the coverage they offer justifies their higher prices. Not only is their hospitalisation coverage generally higher than average, but they also offer useful miscellaneous covers like full terrorism coverage, rental vehicle excess and return, quarantine benefit, adventure sports cover and loss of credit card.

Product Summary

24/7 medical and emergency assistance

Tokio Marine has partnered up with Allianz Global Assistance to administer all claims, including any emergency assistance service that you may require while you’re on vacation. 

Whether you need help with medical issues, locating the nearest medical facility or require them to arrange for emergency evacuation,  you can contact their emergency hotline anytime at +65 6415 8694.

Waiver of rental vehicle excess

If you unfortunately meet with a road accident while you’re abroad, Tokio Marine Xplora Plus covers the rental vehicle excess up to S$1,500 if there is any damage to the car.

You have to ensure that the rental vehicle is rented from a licensed rental agency and has to be driven by you or your authorised driver, if you are the named driver listed on the agreement.

Quarantine benefit

If for any reason you are required to be quarantined because of infectious disease, you’ll be able to receive a quarantine benefit of up to S$50 per day, up to a maximum of S$750 if you opt for the highest tier of coverage.

The quarantine applies when you’re overseas or within seven days of returning to Singapore.

Terrorism cover

TM Xplora Plus offers full terrorism cover of up to S$1,000,000 for a group policy, and up to S$300,000 for an individual insured person below 70 years old.

Credit card fraud

With Tokio Marine, you’re given up to S$300 protection against fraudulent usage of your credit card. This means that you can claim this benefit if unauthorised charges are made on your personal credit card(s) while on your overseas trip.

Policy exclusions

These are some of the exclusions that the policy doesn’t cover, though the list is non-exhaustive. Please refer to their policy wording for the full list of exclusions under this policy.

  • Professional or hazardous sports activities
  • Involvement in naval, military or air force service or operations or hazardous occupations
  • Employed as a manual worker or mining, aerial photography or handling explosives
  • Mental or nervous disorders, venereal or other sexually transmitted diseases
  • Pregnancy or childbirth related injuries
  • Illness, health complications, and pre-existing conditions
  • Confiscation, detention, destruction of belongings by customs or other lawful authorities
  • Suicide, attempted suicide or intentional self-injury
  • Exposure to nuclear or radioactive material
  • Illegal or unlawful acts of the insured person(s)

TM Xplora Plus Classic Plan

For a no-frills insurance package that offers basic coverage, you can opt for the TM Xplora Plus Classic Plan. The plan covers you up to S$300,000 for medical expenses incurred overseas, as well as up to S$15,000 if you incur any medical expenses in Singapore post-trip. They also cover any medical expenses that are pregnancy related, up to S$3,000.

Their hospitalisation coverage is quite comprehensive too. Not only do they pay you S$200 overseas hospital confinement allowance for every complete day you are hospitalised overseas (up to S$15,000), but they also pay for one relative or friend to visit you if you are hospitalised for up to 5 consecutive days, up to S$3,000.

If your trip needs to be changed, you’re covered for travel interruption up to S$7,500. You’ll be happy to know that if you miss a flight connection, they will allow you to claim up to S$200 to offset your cost.

If your baggage gets delayed, you can receive S$200 for each 6 hours of delay overseas and in Singapore, up to S$1,200.

TM Xplora Plus Premier Plan

The Premier plan offers greater coverage if you want a greater peace of mind. Any medical expenses incurred overseas will allow you to claim up to S$500,000, and up to S$25,000 for any medical expenses you incur in Singapore. If you're expecting and incur medical fees, you’ll be reimbursed up to S$5,000.

If you’re hospitalised, you’ll get S$200 as overseas hospital confinement allowance for each day you’re hospitalised, up to S$25,000. If you’re hospitalised for more than 5 consecutive days, Tokio Marine will also be paying up to S$7,000 for one relative or friend to visit you.

Unexpected travel interruptions will be covered up to S$15,000, including the replacement of traveller benefit that pays you up to S$300 for a one-time change of traveller. For baggage delays, you’re entitled to S$200 for every 6 hours of delay overseas and in Singapore, up to S$1,200 (same as Classic Plan).

How to make a claim

To make a claim, download the relevant documents required on their website and notify them of your claim online. Alternatively, you can also give them a call at 6221 6111. You can also refer to this step-by-step guide on how to make a claim.

Be sure to have these documents with you:

  • Completed travel claim form
  • Flight itinerary and/or boarding pass which shows the date of departure and return to Singapore
  • Original hospital/medical bills, receipts and doctor’s memo/inpatient discharge summary, if applicable
  • Detailed list of claims for damaged or lost property and photos of the damaged property if applicable
  • Documents issued by airline/airport/cpmmon carrier/travel agent, if applicable
  • Any additional information and documents required by Tokio Marine or adjuster
