What is Schengen travel insurance and why do I need it?

Schengen, the largest free-travel area in the world, refers to the EU passport-free zone that includes 29 European countries:

If you apply for a Schengen visa, you can travel seamlessly between the above countries. When you apply for the visa, you are required to purchase a Schengen travel insurance plan that offers a minimum coverage of €30,000 (~S$44,000) for medical expenses and repatriation.

However, Schengen-specific travel insurance isn’t available in Singapore. Hence, if you're travelling within the Schengen area, you can just purchase regular travel insurance that covers all the countries you're visiting, as most travel insurance policies already offer coverage of at least S$44,000 for medical expenses and repatriation.

A Schengen visa is not mandatory when you travel to or within the Schengen area, but it makes your travel experience much more hassle-free.

What does Schengen travel insurance cover?

Schengen travel insurance usually offers coverage similar to that of standard travel insurance. The coverage includes medical expenses, hospitalisation, baggage loss and delayed flights.

The only difference is that Schengen travel insurance policies offer at least €30,000 (~S$44,000) of medical coverage, which must include repatriation of remains.

Lost baggage claim when I’m back to Singapore. Claim process online was easy and fast. Received the claim amount within a day via etiqa online account upon submission of all required documents

i bought the annual insurance last sep 2019 before i went for my trip. the claims are really fast and i am talking about hours in claim processing. I sent in my invoice at 1pm and the money was cashed in at 4pm!!! also, customer service is pretty fats in responding as well!!! of coz i did a lot of the things in app as to online i can’t comment.

This is the right travel insurance for you if you want:

complimentary coverage for up to 4 children
same coverage for each child and adult
coverage for overseas and local medical treatments

Direct Asia offers complimentary coverage for up to 4 children. Though most family plans come at a fixed price no matter how many children a family has, they might still charge extra beyond 2 adults. With Direct Asia, you're paying for only 2 adults if you opt for a family plan.

The coverage for each child and adult is the same, which means you can claim coverage for your children up to the same claim limit as for yourself, up to the limit set by the family plan.
