Pros & cons

Pros

  • Earn 5% cashback on qualifying spend

Earn 5% cashback when you spend on online shopping, groceries and transport (SimplyGo transactions and taxi rides). Cashback is earned as SMRT$ and can be used to redeem vouchers and other rewards.

  • Citi World privileges

Cardholders can benefit from exclusive deals that include discounts on Taobao, RedMart, Canton Paradise, LeNu, and more.

  • Easily divide large bills or purchases into affordable installments

Citi PayLite allows cardholders to split their unbilled transactions into more manageable installments. Citi FlexiBill is the same option for existing credit card bills. Applications can be made via the Citi Mobile App, with instant approval.

Cons

  • Minimum spend of $500 monthly to earn upsized cashback

Spending below $500 per month only attracts a base cashback rate of 0.3%. If you are not confident of hitting the monthly minimum spend, consider a cashback credit card with no minimum spend instead, such as the Standard Chartered SimplyCash Credit Card.

  • Minimum balance of SMRT$10 to redeem rewards or get cash rebates

Rewards can only be redeemed with a minimum balance of SMRT$10 in your account. In addition, once a voucher has been exchanged, it has to be used within three months of redemption.

  • Maximum accumulation of points capped at SMRT$600 within a 12-month period

Upon expiry, points cannot be carried over or exchanged for rewards. As a result, cardholders need to be diligent about tracking and redeeming points.

If you are looking for a cashback credit card that rewards you for spending on daily essentials, you can consider the Citi SMRT Card one of your top options. Working adults who commute daily should have no trouble hitting the minimum spend requirement of $500, and Citi World Privileges offer a value-added bonus into an already sweet deal. Keep in mind that not all transactions count towards the minimum spend, and this includes travel-related transactions.

However, if the $500 minimum spend is a barrier for you, check out the Standard Chartered SimplyCash Credit Card, which comes with no minimum spending and an uncapped cashback rate of 1.5% on all transactions. Although this is lower than the enhanced rate of 5% offered on the Citi SMRT Card, the SimplyCash Credit Card is a more sensible option if you find yourself buying things you don’t need just to hit the $500 minimum spend each month.

On the other end of the spectrum, those who are consistently spending up to $800 each month may want to consider the DBS LiveFresh Credit Card for enhanced rewards. Not only does it offer 6% enhanced cashback on qualifying shopping and transport spend, cardholders also have the option to split purchases amounting to $100 or more into three equal instalments, with no interest or processing fees.

In all, the Citi SMRT Card is a good choice for medium-income earners who consistently spend around $500 per month, especially if you commute daily or are in charge of your family’s grocery budget.

Credit card application

Step 1: Start your application on SingSaver

Click on the ‘Apply Now’ button on this page. From there, you can choose your reward (available until 14 May 2025) and continue by entering your email. This will allow you to receive a claim reward email, which will typically arrive within three calendar months after you have fulfilled all the promotion criteria.

Step 2: Fill in your personal and financial details on Citibank’s portal

Next, you will be redirected to Citibank to complete your application. For faster processing, you can choose to retrieve your details with MyInfo via SingPass. MyInfo integration will save you the trouble of uploading information such as your CPF statements and IRAS Notice of Assessment (NOA).

Step 3: Provide supporting documents

If you have chosen not to retrieve your details using MyInfo, Citibank may contact you to request the following documents:

  • Front and back of NRIC (for Singaporeans and PRs) or passport and work pass (for foreigners)
  • Payslips from the past 3 months
  • Latest Notice of Assessment (NOA) from IRAS

Step 4: Submit your application

After submitting your application, you can expect to hear back within 3 to 10 business days. If more documents are required from you, the process can take longer.

Step 5: Receive and activate your card

Upon approval, you will receive your new Citi SMRT Card in the mail. Your new card can be activated on the Citi Mobile App – simply follow the instructions that come with it.
