Want an eco-friendly cashback card? The DBS Live Fresh Credit Card earns up to 10% cashback on your favourite eco-merchants and more.

Normally, when we think of a credit card, we don't really view it as synonymous with "eco-friendliness", rather, "capitalism" comes to mind instead. But what if we told you that there actually does exist a cashback credit card that seamlessly blends consumerism with environmentalism all into one? As ironic as that sounds, that's what the DBS Live Fresh Credit Card promises.

For starters, this card will net you 5% cashback on online and mobile contactless transactions in categories like dining, shopping, entertainment, and more. Spend on eligible eco-merchants? That's an extra 5% cashback — totalling up to 10% cashback on sustainable spend overall!

But that's just the tip of the iceberg; read more to learn what else this coveted cashback card can offer! 🤓

Why should you choose the DBS Live Fresh Credit Card?

DBS-Live-Fresh-Student-Card-1

Pros

Earn 5% cashback on online & Visa contactless spend

As its first selling point, the DBS Live Fresh Card earns 5% cashback on online and mobile contactless transactions! Whether you dine at your favourite eatery, shop online on Shopee or Lazada, or catch a movie at Golden Village, that's an easy 5% cashback in your (digital) pocket already.

And since it follows a whitelist approach for coding its online and contactless spend, all your transactions are as good as gold so long as it doesn't fall under its excluded merchant category codes (MCCs).

However, to qualify for the bonus 5% cashback, it's assumed you spend at least S$600 per calendar month; otherwise, the rate reverts to the base 0.3% cashback.

💡 Pro-tip: Commonly excluded MCCs comprise payments for insurance, utility bills, non-profit companies, hospitals, and the list goes on. Refer to their T&Cs here for the full run-down.

Earn extra 5% cashback on sustainable spend 🌱

Now, moving on to what everyone's here for...

Besides being Singapore's first eco-friendly card (made of 85.5% recyclable plastic), it further promotes its environmental awareness by rewarding cardholders with extra 5% cashback on selected eco-merchants. That totals 10% upsized cashback!

Partake in car-sharing services or need to recharge your electric vehicle? That's 5% more cashback.

Dine or order takeaway at eco-eateries like Just Dabao, Open Farm Community, and others? That's 5% more cashback.

Shop regularly at eco-retailers like Bamboo Straw Girl and Tribe Collective? That's 5% more cashback.

Prefer grocery shopping at eco-supermarkets like Everyday Vegan Grocer, Ryan's Grocery, or Scoop Wholefoods? That's 5% more cashback.

Do your nails at The Nail Social? That's 5% more cashback.

Take public transport daily? That's 5% more cashback.

And this isn't even all of it. 😏 Check out their full list of eligible eco-merchants in their T&Cs or their FAQ.

And you know the drill by now; you'll need to spend minimum S$600 per calendar month to earn this bonus 10% cashback rate. If not, it's 0.3% cashback.

💡Pro-tip: Personally, I spend at least S$50 to S$100 per month on public transport alone, and this amount goes up if we include occasional/emergency Grab and Gojek rides too! Considering an average monthly expenditure of S$1,000, public transport alone accounts for 10% of it! No wonder public transport expenses rack up so quickly within the month. 😰

I recommend downloading the SimplyGo app for easier tracking and consolidation of your commute expenses.

Cons ❌

Monthly cashback cap of S$75

Unfortunately, unlike unlimited cashback cards, the DBS Live Fresh Card imposes a cashback cap of S$75 per calendar month.

What's more unfortunate is that this total of S$75 is split further into categories. The breakdown is as follows:

Cashback cap per calendar month
Maximum spend allowance per month
Online spend
S$20
S$400
Visa contactless spend
S$20
S$400
Sustainable spend
S$15
S$150
All other spend
S$20
S$400

As you can see, the sustainable spend category is allocated the least amount of cashback per month — albeit only S$15 per month, it's still S$5 less cashback than its counterparts. However, upon more calculations, you'll realise that's S$250 less allowance to spend on eco-merchants as compared to the other categories, which is a big difference.

So if you somehow exceed S$150 per month on sustainable spend, then you'll need a complementary credit card (see: second eco-friendly card) to compensate for the budget gap.

Alternative option: OCBC FRANK Credit Card

Want to weigh your options before committing to the DBS Live Fresh Card? Then you might want to check out its direct competitor, the OCBC FRANK Credit Card, first.

In general, the OCBC FRANK functions on similar mechanics as the DBS Live Fresh. It also prides itself as an eco-friendly card, earning up to 10% total cashback on select eco-merchants as well.

So then, what's the difference?

Well, while the DBS Live Fresh only offers 5% cashback on online and Visa contactless spend, the OCBC Frank offers 8% cashback on online, contactless, and foreign currency spend. This added category makes it a viable cashback card to bring on your overseas travel.

Meanwhile, eligible sustainable spend will reward you with an extra 2% cashback — and that's how the OCBC FRANK Card earns 10% cashback in total! Isn't that neat?

However, you'll need to spend a minimum of S$800, capped at S$100 cashback per calendar month. Similarly to DBS Live Fresh, this cashback cap is broken down to S$25 per category. Whether or not this higher-minimum-spend-but-higher-cashback-cap is considered a downside, we'll leave it to your discernment.

Should you get the DBS Live Fresh Credit Card?

DBS-Live-Fresh-Student-Card-1At the end of the day, the DBS Live Fresh Card is a solid, fuss-free cashback card.

Unlike other cards like the Citi Cash Back or POSB Everyday whose cashback rates vary according to specific categories, the DBS Live Fresh's open-ended online and contactless spend approach makes it straightforward to use.

And since it offers a maximum of 10% cashback, this positions it as one of the highest cashback cards on the market, only behind UOB One (up to 10% or 15% cashback).

Moreover, its emphasis on eco-merchants ironically allows us to do our bid for the environment while spending. Thus, it lessens the ecological burden that our consumer footprint leaves, which is always a plus.
