Which Are The Best Cards To Earn Miles While Shopping?

There’s nothing like a little retail therapy every now and then. But which is the best card to use for your shopping sprees?

If you’re looking to rack up the miles when you shop, the good news is that there are four excellent options available for shoppers. Let’s take a look at each of them:

UOB Lady’s Card

UOB Lady's Card

UOB relaunched its Lady’s card portfolio in 2019, and the new offerings are a dramatic improvement over the old versions.

The new UOB Lady’s Card (income requirement: $30K) allows you to pick one of seven categories to earn 4 mpd in.

  1. Beauty & Wellness
  2. Dining
  3. Entertainment
  4. Family
  5. Fashion
  6. Transport
  7. Travel

If you earn slightly more, you can consider applying for the UOB Lady’s Solitaire Card (income requirement: $120K) which allows you to pick two of the above seven categories to earn 4 mpd in.

You’ll earn 4 mpd on the first $1K spent in your selected category each month, and can change your preferred category each quarter. This flexibility means the Lady’s Card can be different things to you at different times. If you’re getting married, switch to the Travel category to get 4 mpd on your hotel banquet payment. If you’re buying a beauty package, switch to beauty and wellness. And of course, if you want a good old fashioned shopping spree, switch to shopping.

The only catch is that this card is exclusively available to female applicants. Sorry, men, but you can ask your wives/girlfriends to apply for one and redeem their miles for you!

Citi Rewards Visa Card

The Citi Rewards Card (income requirement: $30K) offers cardholders 4 mpd (miles per dollar) on the first $1K each month spent on online spending, or any offline spending at department stores which sell bags, shoes or clothes. The full list of eligible MCCs (merchant category codes) can be found here.

This makes the Citi Rewards card a great option for spending at popular online merchants like  Amazon, Lazada, Qoo10 and Taobao.

DBS Woman’s Card

If the gender-exclusivity of the UOB Lady’s Card has you bummed out, you can consider applying for the DBS Woman’s Card. Despite the name, both male and female applicants can apply for this card.

Why would you want to? Because it’s one of the best cards to use for online spending. The DBS Woman’s Card (income requirement: $30K) earns 2 mpd on the first $1K of online spending each month, while the DBS Woman’s World Card (income requirement: $80K) earns 4 mpd on the first $2K of online spending each month.

Note that I said “spending”, not “shopping”. DBS rewards you for all your online spending, which means you could use this card even for things like air ticket purchases, Grab/gojek rides, movie ticket purchases, attraction tickets and food delivery. Of course, you could also use it for your regular online shopping at Amazon, Lazada, Qoo10 and Shopee.

Certain online transactions do not earn points with the DBS Woman’s Card, such as insurance payments, hospital bills and tuition fee payments. Be sure to check the T&Cs

OCBC Titanium Rewards

The OCBC Titanium Rewards card (income requirement: $30K) offers 4 mpd on local and overseas spending on clothes, shoes, bags, department stores, babies’ and children's wear and electronics and gadgets.

You’ll also enjoy 4 mpd on online shopping at Courts, IKEA, Amazon, Shopee, Qoo10, Taobao, Alibaba, AliExpress, Ezbuy and more.

The OCBC Titanium Rewards card offers 4 mpd on these categories up to a maximum spend of $12K each card membership year. This is different from the $1-2K monthly cap that cards like the UOB Lady’s Card and DBS Woman’s Card impose. It’s an important distinction to make, because it means that if you have a single big ticket purchase that exceeds the $1-2K threshold, it’s better to go for a card like this.

Also note that the cap is based on a per card basis. Should you exhaust the 4 mpd cap on the OCBC Titanium Rewards Blue card, there’s nothing stopping you from applying for the Pink version to enjoy a further $12K cap!

Conclusion

As you can see, there are numerous great options to earn miles when you shop online and offline, in Singapore and overseas. That said, don’t let the promise of miles and points be an inducement to spend more than you otherwise would have. Credit card rewards should be seen as a way of not leaving money on the table, not a way of putting more down!
