Best for online and mobile contactless spend: HSBC Revolution Card

HSBC-Revolution-New

By now, most would be familiar with the cult favourite miles card, the HSBC Revolution Card

But for the uninitiated, it’s one of the best miles credit cards you should get your hands on – especially our chronic online shoppers and “I-don’t-bring-cash-out, I-pay-for-everything-by-phone” fiends.

Why? Just for the very simple fact that it rewards cardholders with up to 10X Rewards Points (4 mpd) on eligible online and mobile contactless spend. Eligible categories include dining, travel, retail, and groceries – so basically, everyday spend. 😋

[Update!] From 1 January 2024 onwards, HSBC Revolution will no longer earn 10X Rewards on MCC 4722 (Travel Agencies & Tour Operators) and MCC 7011 (Lodging - Hotels, Motels, and Resorts).

MCC 4722 (Travel Agencies & Tour Operators) ✈️🌍
MCC 7011 (Lodging - Hotels, Motels, and Resorts) 🏠
  • Agoda
  • Changi Recommends
  • Expedia
  • Hotels.com
  • Kayak
  • KKday
  • Klook
  • Pelago
  • Skyscanner
  • Traveloka
  • Trip.com
  • All brick-and-mortar travel agents (e.g. Chan Brothers)
  • Airbnb
  • Marina Bay Sands
  • Millennium Hotels & Resorts
  • M Social
  • Pan Pacific Hotels
  • Rakuten Travel
  • Resorts World Sentosa

This is a significant change since HSBC Revolution follows a bonus whitelist eligibility approach and also has been a go-to miles card for overseas travel. Also, take note of certain major hotel chains that code their own unique MCCs in the 3500-3999 range. For instance, Hilton codes for MCC 3504 whereas Hyatt codes for MCC 3640, and so on.

💡Pro-tip: If you're looking for a card specifically for travel purposes, you can consider the HSBC TravelOne Credit Card instead. More on that below.

All other retail spend (e.g. tapping credit card directly) will earn 1X Rewards Point (0.4 mpd) only.

So in essence, the 10X Rewards Points or 4 mpd is broken down as such:

  • 1X Base Rewards Point (0.4 mpd)
  • 9X Bonus Rewards Points (3.6 mpd)

This rebate rate is capped at S$1,000 spend (9,000 Bonus Points) per calendar month, so once you exceed this limit, you’ll no longer earn the bonus 9X Rewards Points (3.6 mpd). Instead, any amount above S$1,000 will revert to the base 1X Rewards Point (0.4 mpd). Meanwhile, base points are limitless and have no cap.

And we almost forgot to mention the best part: there are no annual fees, like ever.

💡 Pro-tip: Other 4 mpd credit cards are DBS Woman’s World, Citi Rewards, and UOB Preferred Platinum Visa.

Best for fuss-free spending: HSBC Advance Credit Card

HSBC_ADVANCE

Typical unlimited cashback cards offer between 1.5% to 2% cashback on all spend, but with the HSBC Advance Credit Card, it’s different. How so?

Well, the HSBC Advance Credit Card offers up to 3.5% cashback on eligible transactions with no minimum spend. It also adopts a blacklist approach to qualifying merchants, so as long as your transaction doesn’t fall under a merchant exclusion it’s fair game.

The only caveat is that there are some minor conditions in order to cap out its cashback. For clarity, its 3.5% cashback consists of 2.5% base cashback and 1% additional HSBC Everyday+ cashback

Its base cashback can be further broken down into:

Monthly spend
Base cashback
Maximum cashback cap per calendar month
S$2,000 and below
1.5%
S$70
Above S$2,000
2.5%

So yes, unfortunately, the HSBC Advance Credit Card’s base cashback is limited. So regardless if you spend under or above S$2,000, your cashback will be capped at S$70 per calendar month.

But wait, what about the additional 1% cashback? To earn that, you’ll need to open an HSBC Everyday Global Account and complete two steps:

  • Deposit a minimum of S$2,000 fresh funds (or S$5,000 for HSBC Jade or Premier customers) per month
  • Perform 5 eligible transactions per month

And voila! You’ve just earned yourself an extra 1% HSBC Everyday+ cashback. And best of all, it has a higher cashback cap of S$300 (or S$500 for HSBC Jade or Premier customers) per calendar month.

This effectively brings your total cashback cap to S$600 or S$800 depending on your savings account tier and bonus interest.

Overall, the HSBC Advance Credit Card is ideal for satisfying big-ticket purchases like wedding expenses and home renovation costs.

Best for family expenses: HSBC Visa Platinum Card

HSBC_VISA_PLATINUM

If you’re a DINK (dual-income-no-kids) couple, you might want to look at the two previous credit cards. But if you’re the opposite with a couple of kids in tow, the HSBC Visa Platinum Card might be your saving grace for family expenses.

Apart from looking like an HSBC Revolution darker grey knockoff, the HSBC Visa Platinum Card is a decent cashback card offering 5% quarterly cash rebate on eligible dining, grocery, and fuel transactions with a minimum S$600 monthly spend.

The only downside is that you’ll need to hit this monthly spend for at least three consecutive months in order to qualify for the cashback. Furthermore, cashback is capped at S$250 per quarter.

💡 Pro-tip: This is a comparable cashback rate to the POSB Everyday Card (5% on Sheng Siong groceries).

Besides that, similarly to the HSBC Advance Card, you can also earn an additional 1% HSBC Everyday+ cashback with the HSBC Everyday Global Account. To reiterate, you’ll have to:

  • Deposit a minimum of S$2,000 fresh funds (or S$5,000 for HSBC Jade or Premier customers) per month
  • Make 5 eligible transactions per month

Additional cashback is capped at S$300 per calendar month (S$500 for HSBC Jade or Premier customers).

But that’s not all. This credit card adds a unique twist to the cashback formula by offering 1X Reward Point per dollar on eligible shopping. With that, you’ll gain access to over 1,000 HSBC ENTERTAINER deals and be able to redeem more fun perks and experiences for your little ones.

Also, if you’re the household’s designated chauffeur, treat yourself to up to 17% fuel savings at Shell and Caltex kiosks. Hopefully, that’ll ease your driving woes a little.

And as the cherry on top, there are no annual fees whatsoever.

Best for the global traveller: HSBC TravelOne Card

HSBC TravelOne

Still in the midst of planning your June holidays, or maybe even for the year-end holidays already? 😏 For those in need of a swanky, brand new travel card, look no further than HSBC's newest miles credit card launch – the HSBC TravelOne Card.

It took the market by storm with its impressive array of hotel and airline partners like Accor Live Limitless, IHG One Rewards, Marriott Bonvoy, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Singapore Airlines, and counting!

💡Fun fact: It currently works with the most travel partners out of any miles card and even promises more than 20 partners by the end of 2023!

Additionally, cardmembers are entitled to 4 complimentary airport lounge access

But if that's not convincing enough, it earns 3X Rewards Points (1.2 mpd) on local spend and 6X Rewards Points (2.4 mpd) on foreign currency spend. In contrast to the HSBC Revolution, the HSBC TravelOne follows a merchant blacklist approach; so as long as your transaction doesn't fall under its MCC exclusions, it's as good as gold!

You can even apply for up to five supplementary cards with lifetime annual fee waivers. Basically, you and your entire family are settled for life.
