Mobile wallets such as Google pay and Apple Pay offer you an easy and seamless way to use your credit cards to pay for almost everything under the sun, whether it's your MRT/bus journeys, food, or shopping online at your favourite merchants.

What's more, most credit cards allow you to earn regular rewards when you make payments with a mobile wallet.

You’ll earn 10X Reward points per dollar spent on eligible online and offline contactless purchases (including Apple Pay and Google Pay), which is equivalent to 4 miles per dollar (mpd) or 2.5% cashback.

The caveat is that the 10X bonus points are capped at S$1,000 per month (or 9,000 reward points), so anything above that threshold will earn you 1X point per dollar spent instead (or 0.4 mpd).

You’ll also earn 1X point per dollar if they’re qualified transactions but not eligible transactions such as non-contactless payments or if the merchant doesn’t fall under the eligible MCC.

There are also certain transactions that are ineligible for rewards; these include top-ups to mobile wallets (YouTrip, EZ-Link, GrabPay, etc.), payments on utilities, quasi-cash transactions, and more. You may refer to the full list of exclusions here

The Citi Rewards Card is another one of our favourite miles cards. It offers 10X rewards (or 4 mpd) for every dollar spent on eligible retail and online purchases, whether it’s shopping, food delivery, groceries, streaming services, or ride-hailing services.

However, like the HSBC Revolution, there’s a monthly cap of S$1,000 to earn bonus rewards; once you’ve breached that cap, you’ll only earn 1 Reward point (or 0.4 mpd) for every dollar spent.

As with all credit cards, there is a list of categories that are excluded from bonus points. Most notably, travel-related transactions (flights, hotel, car rental, etc.) and mobile wallet purchases are excluded.

For the latter, this means that you won’t earn 10X Rewards points if you use a mobile wallet such as Google Pay to pay for transactions.

Amaze-Front-1-01-646x1024

However, you can bypass this by pairing your Citi Rewards Card with the Instarem amaze card and linking your amaze card to Google Pay (Apple Pay isn't currently supported on amaze); the transaction will be counted as an online transaction, and you’ll continue to earn 10X Rewards points/4 mpd as long as they're eligible.

The amaze card is also a great card for overseas spending. Not only does it offer a competitive foreign currency conversion rate, but you can also earn 1% cashback on foreign transactions.

In other words, the Citi Rewards Card + amaze card combo is one of the best ways to get the most out of your local and foreign spending — don't leave home without it.

If you like the convenience of using mobile wallets such as Google Pay, Apple Pay, and UOB Mighty for your purchases, the UOB One Card offers the same rebates that you would get with the physical card.

In its heyday, the UOB One Card offered up to 5% base cashback every quarter. Though this has since been nerfed to 3.33%, it’s still a solid card worth considering, especially if you have consistent spending habits every month.

How the cashback mechanism works: you’ll earn a base cashback of 3.33% if you meet the minimum spending requirement of $500, S$1,000, or S$2,000 per month in a quarter. For example, you’ll need to make at least five transactions and spend $2,000 monthly for three months to be eligible for the maximum 3.33% base cashback (S$200).

On top of the 3.33% base cashback, you’ll also earn an additional cashback of up to 6.67% per quarter if you make a minimum of five transactions in a month a quarter on eligible merchants such as Grab, Shopee, and Dairy Farm merchants.

For a limited period, new UOB members who sign up for the UOB One Card will also get to enjoy up to 5% enhanced cashback. This effectively means that you can get up to 15% cashback in a quarter.
