Best value-for-money: FWD Travel Insurance

fwdlogo

If you subscribe to the belief that "having some coverage is better than having none" and prioritise affordability, FWD Travel Insurance could be an excellent choice for you. Their plans kick off at just S$25.20 for a 5-day trip to Bali, making them the most budget-friendly option available.

However, when it comes to comparing the extent of coverage, it doesn't fall short. They provide substantial overseas medical coverage, allowing claims of up to S$1,000,000. Additionally, their coverage for trip cancellation is quite generous, offering up to S$15,000 in protection.

The only drawback is that the plan doesn't include COVID-19 coverage as a standard feature, but you can opt for an add-on rider at an additional cost of S$10 (for a 5-day trip to Bali). This rider offers coverage of up to S$200,000 for medical expenses related to COVID-19, a daily overseas quarantine allowance of S$50 for a maximum of 14 days, and trip disruption coverage of up to S$5,000.

Beyond its cost-effectiveness, FWD Travel Insurance boasts a hassle-free claims system and efficient customer service. You can easily submit your claims via the FWD SG App and seek assistance if needed.

Also, FWD just added coverage for trip cancellation, postponement or curtailment for any reason, up to S$6,000. This is only applicable if you purchase the add-on within 7 days from the initial trip deposit for your trip.

Best for comprehensive coverage: Singlife Travel Insurance

sl-logo-singlife

For those seeking the most comprehensive travel insurance package, Singlife offers an exceptional all-encompassing policy that provides extensive coverage, even for unique scenarios such as the loss of bridal accessories, inclement weather conditions, and trip cancellations for any reason.

With Singlife's Travel Prestige plan, you can benefit from an impressive feature that includes unlimited coverage for medical expenses, a rarity among insurers.

Their coverage for travel cancellations extends up to S$15,000, while trip cancellation for any reason is capped at S$5,000 for Travel Plus and Travel Prestige Plans. This means you have the flexibility to cancel your plans due to conflicting events, changes in your itinerary, or simply a change of heart. However, the caveat is you have to purchase your policy within seven days of booking your flights or hotels to qualify for a claim.

Singlife also provides a unique benefit of rainfall coverage, offering compensation of up to S$150 in the event of rainfall exceeding 6.4mm within a 24-hour period, should it disrupt your travel plans. Furthermore, their coverage extends to adventurous activities like white-water rafting, jet skiing, and kayaking, making it an ideal choice for those seeking overseas sports adventures.

Notably, this plan includes COVID-19 coverage, providing up to S$200,000 for overseas medical expenses.

Singlife Travel Insurance Promotion:

Single Trip: Enjoy a 25% discount when you use the promo code TRAVEL25 for Single Trip. Valid till 30 April 2024. T&Cs apply.

Ensuring you have medical expense coverage is essential regardless of your travel destination, not limited to Bali alone. However, it's crucial to confirm that your coverage extends to the activities you plan to engage in, such as water sports, winter sports, and adventurous pursuits like kayaking, white-water rafting, ATV rides, jet skiing, and more.

If you're visiting Bali, there's a good chance you and your fellow travellers, if you're adventure enthusiasts, may partake in one or more of these activities, whether it's hiking up Mt. Batur, enjoying water rafting, or trying out an ATV or quad bike.

That's why it's imperative to thoroughly review the details of your travel insurance policy, as some policies and insurers may explicitly exclude coverage for these adventurous sports. Fortunately, many policies do include such coverage.

Additionally, certain travel insurance policies may even provide coverage for sports equipment, such as bicycles, golf clubs, skis, and more. This can be particularly valuable for travellers bringing their own expensive equipment when travelling abroad.

Loss of belongings

Depending on your destination within Bali, some areas are notorious for high pickpocketing rates, and it's always wiser to prioritise caution. Whether you fall victim to pickpocketing, accidentally misplace your valuables, or experience damage to them, obtaining comprehensive coverage for your lost belongings is of utmost importance, as it can offer you a peace of mind.

This is particularly crucial for individuals carrying laptops for work or cameras and equipment for professional photography, as travel insurance plans often extend coverage to these items.

Are you contemplating a pre-wedding photoshoot in Bali? There's no need for concern, as certain travel insurance plans also include protection for the loss of bridal attire, accessories, and even your precious wedding album!

COVID-19 medical expenses

While much of the world is adjusting to coexisting with COVID-19, it remains prudent to secure coverage for this virus, especially in regions where it continues to be a concern.

By choosing COVID-19 coverage, you can postpone or cancel your trip should you or your travel companion contract COVID-19 before your departure. Additionally, you'll have the means to acquire over-the-counter medications or seek treatment at a clinic if you fall ill with COVID-19 during your journey.

In the event that you experience severe illness due to COVID-19 or encounter medical complications arising from the virus, certain travel insurance policies can provide coverage for your hospitalisation and even extend hospital benefits. In the unfortunate event of a critical situation, some policies also offer the option of emergency evacuation back to Singapore for necessary treatment.

Flight delay or cancellation

I'm sure you're familiar with numerous instances where friends, family members, or even yourself have found themselves stranded at the airport due to unexpected flight delays or cancellations. Regardless of the duration of the delay, spending those precious hours at the airport and having your plans disrupted can be immensely frustrating.

This is precisely why having the opportunity to receive compensation for flight delays or cancellations is crucial, as it allows you to recoup at least some of the expenses incurred during travel disruptions. Typically, insurers provide payouts at intervals of every 4 to 6 hours, up to a certain cap.

This financial support provides you with the means to potentially book a nearby hotel or cover any missed activities resulting from your flight delay, should the need arise.

Why Buying Travel Insurance is Necessary

FAQs

Must I buy travel insurance when travelling to Bali from Singapore?

It is not mandatory to purchase travel insurance when travelling to Bali, but it’s highly recommended and encouraged to safeguard yourself against any unfortunate circumstances abroad.

It also gives you a peace of mind knowing that you’re covered for medical expenses, baggage loss, flight delay, trip cancellations, emergency services and even COVID-19 medical expenses.

Are there any travel requirements or restrictions for travelling to Bali?

As of 21 June 2023, Indonesia no longer requires PCR testing or proof of COVID-19 vaccination for entry into Indonesia.

For more information, head over to the Indonesian Directorate General of Immigration’s website here.

Do I need a visa for entering Bali?

Singaporeans travelling with a Singapore Passport can visit Indonesia for up to 30 days without a visa.

If you’re planning to stay for more than 30 days, you should apply for the appropriate visa before you depart from Singapore. Visa-free visits cannot be extended beyond the 30 days allotted.

For more information about the type of visa you need, please check the Indonesian Directorate General of Immigration’s website here.

What are CHSE hotels?

CHSE hotels are accommodation options that have met the standards of Cleanliness, Health, Safety, and Environmental Sustainability.

If you’re in Bali, you can choose to stay at CHSE hotels for a more comfortable stay. But if you prefer not to and value affordability, you can select an accommodation of your choice.

However, in July 2023, Bali has recently introduced newer and stricter rules that all tourists have to adhere to. One of them is staying at hotels and villas that are officially recognised and approved by the relevant authorities in Bali.

Staying in accommodations that are unregistered, such as unlicensed Airbnb rentals, guesthouses, or bed and breakfasts, is prohibited. Breaching this rule can result in significant repercussions, as authorities may initiate inquiries and execute raids to ensure adherence to the regulations.

Does travel insurance cover volcanic activities?

Most insurance companies include natural disasters in their trip cancellation coverage plans. If a volcanic eruption disrupts your traveller’s destination or causes flight cancellations, you can make a claim.

This also extends to injury, loss and damage due to natural disasters like volcanic activities.

Be sure to read the policy wording of your travel insurance for more information.

Will I be covered for scooter accidents under travel insurance?

Yes, travel insurance covers any injury sustained as long as the activity you’re participating in isn’t excluded, for example, certain extreme sports that are considered dangerous or against any safety guidelines.

If you’re riding as a pillion for scooters, motorbikes or mopeds and are injured, you can make a travel insurance claim for your medical expenses.

However, if you’re riding a vehicle without a valid license, chances are you won’t be able to cover for your injuries as providers don’t cover illegal activities.

When is the best time to go to Bali?

The best time to visit Bali is between April and October when the island is experiencing its dry season. Although the weather is ideal for travellers, the island is also subject to humid days throughout the year.

Since Bali experiences summer all year round, the period to avoid visiting Bali is during the monsoon period, with the wettest months being December and January, when you can expect frequent rainfall.

How much does it cost to go to Bali?

The costs of your trip to Bali really depend on what you’re planning on doing, the accommodations you choose and the restaurants you go to. For a 5-day trip to Bali, you can spend anywhere from S$500 to S$1,200, all expenses included.

If you are on a tight budget, consider taking a budget airline that would cost around S$150 to S$250 for a flight, eat at more warungs instead of restaurants and beachclubs, and choose cheaper accommodation options like hostels or shared villas.

For those who are more willing to spend, taking a full flight, booking an extravagant villa and eating at high-end restaurants, cafes and beach clubs will definitely set you back more. Activities like white water rafting, ATV bike rides, Mount Batur sunrise tours will also cost about S$30 to S$100 for each package that you can book on sites like Traveloka and Klook.

Ultimately, it really depends on your lifestyle and the kind of traveller you are.
