SIA Travel Protect Review: Competent Travel Insurance Plan With Extras For KrisFlyer Members

Last updated 21 December, 2023

SIA Travel Protect offers well-rounded benefits at a reasonable price, but reserves some of its best bits for KrisFlyer members only. Here’s the lowdown on this understated travel insurance plan.

Chalk it down to the SIA effect but, Singapore Air’s travel insurance policy is just as… elegant as the rest of its offerings.

SIA Travel Protect – underwritten by French insurer Allianz – is styled as a no-frills plan that gets the job done. But it manages to distinguish itself from other basic travel plans by ensuring generous coverage levels where it matters.

It also cannot help but reserve some of the best bits for KrisFlyer members only, but you gotta give your loyal members some sweet treats one way or another.

Let’s take a closer look at what’s under the hood of SIA Travel Protect.

Singsaver Exclusive Allied World Travel Insurance Promo: Enjoy a 30% discount for Single Trip and a 10% discount for Annual Trip when you buy now! Valid till 24 Mar 2024.

Why choose SIA Travel Protect?

SIA Travel Protect doesn’t offer the widest range of benefits. Instead it opts to focus on the arguably the most common and essential travel benefits. But what saves the plan from feeling underwhelming is the generous coverage levels that rival other more full-bodied, and often costlier, plans.

And that’s the other part that makes this plan attractive. SIA Travel Protect is competitively priced, providing value-for-money without leaving you feeling unsure or worried about your coverage.

But perhaps the most compelling reason to get this plan is the perks offered to KrisFlyer members. Having an active membership grants you higher coverage for important benefits such as overseas medical expenses and emergency evacuation, along with additional benefits such as personal liability benefits and rental car excess.

SIA Travel Protect – what does this plan exclude?

Overseas medical and hospitalisation benefits

SIA Travel Protect offers up to S$500,000 in overseas medical expenses, including emergency dental benefits. This is bumped up to S$1 million if you’re a KrisFlyer member.

You’ll receive the same level of coverage if you need to be hospitalised due to COVID-19.

Emergency evacuation and personal accident benefits

Emergency evacuation benefits are pegged at S$300,000 for non-KrisFlyer members, and S$500,000 for KrisFlyer members. There’s a search-and-rescue sublimit of S$10,000, which does curtail the utility of this benefit.

But then again, if you’re planning on participating in activities that might see you end up getting lost, this isn’t quite the right plan for you, giving the lack of cover for adventurous or high-risk sports and activities.

In any case, this plan also comes with travel accident benefits. Ordinary applicants will be covered for up to S$80,000 here, while KrisFlyer members are covered for up to S$10,000.

Travel inconvenience

This is where SIA Travel Protect gets the most generous. You’ll be entitled to up to S$10,000 in benefits should your trip be cancelled or cut short. This also applies if your trip was disrupted due to COVID-19.

The high coverage limit makes this plan better suited to covering family trips, as the cost of unused accommodations, tickets and other expenses are multiplied when there are more people travelling together.

This plan also offers high coverage for lost luggage – S$4,000 for non-KrisFlyer members, and S$5,000 for KrisFlyer members. However, the sub-limit per item is rather low at S$500, so you might not want to use your most expensive luggage.

KrisFlyer members-only benefits

And as mentioned, there are also additional benefits that only KrisFlyer members are entitled to. These include personal liability coverage of S$1 million; rental car excess coverage of S$750, and loss of identification documents and personal cash, at up to S$650 each.

How much does SIA Travel Protect cost?

KrisFlyer Comprehensive

One adult, seven days in Thailand

S$38

One adult, seven days in Japan

S$48

One adult, seven days in the United Kingdom

S$67

We’ve mapped out how much SIA Travel Protect costs for a single adult traveller. Here’s what we found out.

  • For a 7-day trip in Southeast Asia, the premiums for KrisFlyer comprehensive is S$38.
  • For a 7-day trip in the Asia-Pacific region, premiums cost S$48.
  • For a 7-day trip in Europe, premiums cost S$67.

Note that the premiums shown here are for KrisFlyer comprehensive only. Unlike other plans, you will not be given the choice to choose between Comprehensive and KrisFlyer Comprehensive. Instead, it seems you are automatically offered either plan based on your KrisFlyer member status (or lack thereof).

Should you choose SIA Travel Protect? Pros and cons

Pros

Cons

Competitively priced plan that focuses only on the essentials

No cover for pre-existing conditions

High protection levels where it matters

No cover for adventurous sports

Extra benefits and higher cover for KrisFlyer members

Refreshingly, deciding whether to get SIA Travel Protect or not is an easier choice than most, as it sticks to the essentials without trying to tempt you with a dazzling array of benefits, half of which you actually may not need.

Provided you do not have pre-existing conditions, and do not need adventurous activities coverage, you should find this to be a perfectly capable travel plan that is sufficient for your needs.

And for KrisFlyer members, the extra benefits just make for a nice layer of added frosting on top.
