SIA travel insurance, known as SIA Travel Protect, offers well-rounded benefits at a reasonable price but reserves some of its best bits for KrisFlyer members only. Here's the lowdown on this understated travel insurance plan.

Chalk it down to the SIA effect but, Singapore Airline’s travel insurance policy is just as… elegant as the rest of its offerings.

SIA Travel Protect–underwritten by French insurer Allianz–is styled as a no-frills plan that gets the job done. But it manages to distinguish itself from other basic travel plans by ensuring generous coverage levels where it matters.

It also cannot help but reserve some of the best bits for KrisFlyer members only, but you gotta give your loyal members some sweet treats one way or another.

Let’s take a closer look at what’s under the hood of SIA Travel Protect.

Comparing SIA Travel Insurance to Other Plans

Whether you seek affordability, value, or peace of mind in your travel insurance plan, SIA Travel Protect offers robust options with its Comprehensive and KrisFlyer Comprehensive policies. Compared to other travel policies, Both of these plans provide excellent value within their pricing brackets, based on the benefits provided for the cost.

Travellers on flying on Singapore Airlines who prioritise coverage for travel inconveniences such as trip cancellations, delays, and lost baggage will find SIA Travel Protect highly beneficial, as it offers substantial coverage in these areas.

SIA Travel Protect ensures you have access to comprehensive support in case of emergencies. However, it’s important to note that adventurous sports are not covered under these plans—those would be found in travel insurance for sports.

KrisFlyer members receive additional perks with the KrisFlyer Comprehensive plan, such as enhanced overseas medical benefits, increased travel accident cover, personal liability coverage up to S$1 million, rental vehicle excess, and compensation for lost identification documents and personal cash.

These extra benefits make the KrisFlyer Comprehensive plan particularly attractive for frequent travellers seeking premium protection and added value for their loyalty.

Overseas Medical and Hospitalisation Benefits

SIA Travel Protect offers up to S$500,000 in overseas medical expenses, including emergency dental benefits. This is bumped up to S$1 million if you’re a KrisFlyer member.

You’ll receive the same level of coverage if you need to be hospitalised due to COVID-19.

Emergency Evacuation and Personal Accident Benefits

Emergency evacuation and repatriation of remains are pegged at S$300,000 for non-KrisFlyer members, and S$500,000 for KrisFlyer members. There’s a search-and-rescue sublimit of S$10,000, which does curtail the utility of this benefit.

But then again, if you’re planning on participating in activities that might see you end up getting lost, this isn’t quite the right plan for you, giving the lack of cover for adventurous or high-risk sports and activities. These travellers should get travel insurance that has substantial coverage for high-risk adventurous activities.

In any case, this plan also comes with travel accident benefits. Ordinary applicants will be covered for up to S$80,000 here, while KrisFlyer members are covered for up to S$10,000.

Travel Inconvenience

Travel disruptions are frustrating but often unavoidable.

SIA travel insurance generously covers trip cancellations or interruptions, including those caused by COVID-19. You're entitled to claim up to S$10,000 in benefits, minimising the financial impact when your travel plans go awry.

The high coverage limit makes Singapore Airlines’ plan better suited to covering family trips, as the cost of unused accommodations, tickets and other expenses are multiplied when there are more people travelling together.

This plan also offers high coverage for lost luggage–S$4,000 for non-KrisFlyer members, and S$5,000 for KrisFlyer members. However, the sub-limit per item is rather low at S$500, so you might not want to use your most expensive luggage. Make sure to review your policy coverage to see how you can maximise these benefits.

Krisflyer Members-Only Benefits

And as mentioned, there are also additional benefits that only KrisFlyer members are entitled to. These include personal liability coverage of S$1 million; rental car excess coverage of S$750, and loss of identification documents and personal cash, at up to S$650 each.
